Opinions

What are your opinions on ragging? Do you think it increases bonding between peers? Do you think it creates a tradition? Do you think it is part of an unending cycle and since it was done to you, you must also do it to your juniors? Or do you think it is a social evil which must be rooted out completely? Have your say? Yes, there is definitely a fear. In this age, ragging has taken a horrendous form. Ragging can only be tolerated to a certain extent but once it as soon as it starts playing with the lives of young students, it displays a kind of mental perversion of the perpetrators. Ragging destroys the future of these victims. So I think that the government and the college authorities should punish raggers so as to eradicate ragging from society.

Ragging is a very old phenomenon. Ragging is inhumane. For newcomers to a college, both the excitement and fear of entering a new college exists along with the fear of ragging. Ragging is the same for both boys and girls. When ragging becomes very severe, students cannot concentrate on their studies. Then they try to stay away from college or even worse, leave college. Therefore, college authorities should take strict measures against ragging and punish raggers so that they do not repeat their offence. Ragging is perversion of the worst kind.

Hi, I am Joydeep. I think ragging reflects a perverted mentality.
Since enetering the twelfth standard, I have been in fear of ragging. As days started passing by and the time for me to enter college started coming near, the more I started living in fear of ragging. From quite an early age I used to see on television and in newspapers how in engineering and medical colleges, seniors carried out physical and mental torture upon their juniors. This torture is so extreme that some students die or some commit suicide being unable to bear such torture any longer. So when I think that after appearing for my higher secondary examinations, I shall have to face such vioenmt ragging in college, then I feel extremely afraid. Ragging not only affects the studies but also makes these victims mentally unstable for the rest of their lives.
Yes, now some colleges have an anti-ragging commission. If all colleges set up such a commission and if they take strong actions against raggers and if the government also tries to stop ragging, then it will pave the way for a brighter future for students.

Ragging is a word known to us. We are very familiar with ragging through newspapers and TV news channels. It is a problem in most colleges and universities specially the renowned institutions, not only in our state but also all over the country. There are so many social problems but ragging is one vital and cruel problem in our society. So many parents have lost their beloved child.

These ragged students can be your own, may be your relative or may be the child of someone known to you. Now here are some obvious questions. Why are pupils ragged? What do they (ragger) get from ragging? What are the solutions to prevent ragging? Mainly these three questions come in our mind automatically.

Ragging is to make a newcomer uneasy and insult him or her in front of others to get some satisfaction and enjoyment. Are they (ragger) “abnormal” or a patient of mental disorder? No they are not, they are all brilliant students and scholars. Possibly they were scolded and beaten by their parents and teachers in their childhood. They were kids at the time but that anger still exists in them, which they couldn’t show then and was suppressed. So now we are senior and we can do any thing to our juniors. Ragging means torturing both physically and mentally. So many ragged students have committed suicide.

Actually the raggers have no “sympathy” neither on their juniors nor their parents. Are they human beings? They have no sense of humanity? But they expect humanity from others. Strange. There so many ways to enjoy life, but by torturing a living being? What kind of enjoyment is that?

There are some who want to Rag the newcomers just because their seniors ragged them when they first stepped into their college. Now it’s their turn to treat the new ‘bakras’ the same way they were, a few months back.

Every institution has a regulation against ragging. Administration can take necessary action against a ragger but they cannot implement the rules because the ragger has threatened them. Now the Honorable Supreme Court has given strict verdict against ragging. If a particular institution does not punish the ragger the institution’s affiliation will be cancelled.

So the total eradication of ragging will be possible not only by court or by law but also our awareness .The unity of the entire people of our society. Our slogan will be “To Prevent Ragging Save Life and Retain Smile”

Ragging should be stopped definitely, however this should also be noted that the students (peers and juniors) should not laugh or make fun of someone who might be a little ‘different’ because of his/her queer identity. If one is being singled out and ragged then the hurt is more than maybe when it happens as a group. People need to be educated about this. There was a lot of pressure with my identity from the beginning. When I joined as a student we were not so aware of sexual identity terms. But ragging based on sexual identity has nothing to do with seniority or junior, he is ragged irrespective of that by his peers and seniors.

People say ragging is bad at least on face, and so declares the law which they are supposed to abide by. But at the back of their mind I am certain, there is quite a substantial number who find a pleasure of some kind associated with the act of ragging. And to this "hated majority" ragging can be allowed to various degrees. The question is not how to stop it but what is so enticing in the act?
